While cleaning out my car, I found a long lost iPod Shuffle beneath the driver's seat, and as it turns out, it was my sister's old iPod Shuffle. Since I formatted my old Mac a few months back, her music went missing. Fortunately for her, she discovered that it (the Shuffle) still had all her old 200+ songs still on it from the last time it was synched. After a bit of tinkering (and an online how-to), we managed to break into the device and get her collection back, and re-sync it back with her netbook (plus a long overdue firmware update to the old bug).

Felt nice to help retrieve a crap-ton of lost information; except this time, it wasn't my information that was lost that got recovered.

My grandpa is proud that I can speak whole sentences in another language. It's a huge improvement from my old one-word answers to everything.

Hm, this is an interesting sensation. I feel all vaguely tingly, and all thoughts seem like some sort of deep epiphany, even though I recognize that they are not. This is usually indicative of a lack of sleep, which is a shame, but it's a pleasant sensation while it lasts, especially since it makes the headache feel unimportant (kinda the same effect that some painkillers have; I still feel it, it just doesn't matter).

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Things... Got better.

Well. I think I'm going to eat. Rest a bit and maybe just turn my brain off and play oblivion for the rest of the night.

I don't doubt you, since there's a rather obvious bias between our experiences, but it's always kind of surprising to note another way in which I've been spared some stress to the point where I hadn't even considered its existence.

Ah, well... in some female circles, there's this sort of contest to find out who can be the most giving, self-sacrificing, and "progressive" (where that mostly means bake sales and so on).  So yeah, it's a fad, and part of the fad was getting selfish people to give up their treasures.

I rationalize that I've made enough self-sacrifice in other areas that I should at least be permitted to keep my left-over hair, as in this case it's down to my well-being (pretty much irreplaceable) versus someone else's (they don't specifically need my hair, and there's enough donors without my drop in the bucket).

Sorry... it's a really touchy area for me =(

As for why I'm cutting it, when I dropped out of school a year or so ago, I discovered that I'd lost maybe half the volume of my hair while I was in college, likely due to a combination of malnutrition (self-imposed) and college vegetarian eating (hint: they pretty much don't provide protein outside of dangerously salty cheese pizza; a frequent lunch for us would be hummus and pita bread, or the like, and if you didn't want [totally disgusting] powdered eggs you were stuck with white flour bagels or shitty cereal).

A year later, my hair is still thinned out and full of split ends, very hard to take care of given its length, makes it hard to wash my face if I don't want to wash it as well (leading in part to blepharitis, which is the the reason why I can't try contacts), a major time-sink, a hygiene problem, and almost impossible to experiment with stylistically because it is long, curly, brittle, and greasy and constantly gets in the way if it's in the least bit loose.  Oh, and curly -> constant tangles.

As such, rather than watch it keep on thinning out, as it has been, with no consistency whatsoever from root to tip, I'm chopping it off and learning how to take care of it better from the start.  Better 10 years regrowing than 10 years wasting time in its care and being dissatisfied with its appearance.

tl;dr: hair maintenance takes up valuable study time so I am removing it with knives

This made me think of someone squeezing a baby into a bowl... Sometimes, I worry for myself.

Anyway, I'm happy because I'm playing DF.

hair stuff

Have you considered an a-line or stacked bob? It's fashionable, easy to maintain and sexy (and short.) It also happens to be my favorite ladies' haircut, so..uh..take that as you will. If you'd like further advice, I can ask my hairdresser wife for you.

Didn't mean to touch a nerve about the donating thing. I was thinking in utilitarian terms, and tend to find sentimental value in very few things, so that didn't occur to me. Good luck in future hair endeavors, though. Hairstyles are things that can have a dramatic effect on how people perceive you, so have fun experimenting!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I can relate to some of the long hair blues. Though I miss mine for entirely different reasons, shorter is easier to take care of. That much is good. I got a laugh out of the "removing it with knives" comment. :D
