Got a personal tour of my undergrad alma mater (UNC-Greensboro) yesterday. Brought back a lot of happy memories. Got to see a lot of my old haunts, had lunch at the bar across the street from campus where I was once on a first-name basis with the staff, chat with some professors, even got to see my old dorm room and meet its current occupants.

Always thought it was strange how even Ph.D's tend to be more loyal to their undergraduate school than they are their grad and post-grad schools, but I kinda get it now. As a grad or post-grad student, you spend 2-3 years at a school (though rarely living on campus or having time for anything other than your studies) working on your degree. But as an undergrad, you spend four (or more) years living in your school.

I'm happy because Cataclysm just got into my top ten favourite games list.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

So I'm back, alive.  Somebody at the house called and said a bear came and took the garbage so I was being pretty alert.  And by alert I mean I drank as much as I could before going to bed so I held my piss the entire night because FUCK THAT NOISE.  Also my Dad and I watched Dune while going to sleep and it was really good.

HE WHO CONTROLS THE SPICE CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE

And yesterday before we left I fired a crossbow with my Dad and Pepere, played Guess Who? with my sister but with ugly people and house appliances, and watched a bunch of chicken attack my Dad's foam before he attacked them with his shirt.

Also my Dad smokes way too much marijuana.

EDIT:
Argh the power outlet I use for my netbook isn't working.  Why is half the electricity in the house gone?!  Well whatever my Dad made frozen pizza and I have mountain dew.

This man. This man is my hero. Navy EOD dancing before striking an epic pose and detonating explosives.

I... I have seen the light
That bit right at the end, where he's holding a pair of assault rifle's as it's exploding, that should be the picture they use for EOD recruiting poster.

My connection showed signs of revitalization - yay, TF2 time!

...

The second it had finished updating it started to flicker off again... well, no biggie.

Hmm... Joining the Navy would stave off my financial problems if I could find some way to bypass all the physical requirements that no doubt exist...

Reading through old sad posts has shown me that if I move to England I could technically start a gypsy caravan. (probably)

With the caption: "EOD: We pay you to blow shit up."

My brother did EOD in Iraq (even though it's totally not in his job description -- on paper, he's a Humvee mechanic), and ATF has a number of EOD techs that I've gotten to know. You have to be slightly crazy to say, "Okay, I'll put on this armored suit and go walk over to that stash of high explosives that could go off at any moment, and plant *another* explosive in just the right place."
