Cotton and natural fibres are quite fire resistant, at least much more so than most synthetics. Polyester just melts close to flame. It's the worst. The wicking on our fire tools are kevlar, the same stuff bullet proof vests are made of. It's also highly flame resistant. Sometimes we use nomex as well.

Also, it is much harder to light yourself on fire than you would expect if you dress right. Actual injuries come from overall proximity to heat and inhalation.

Okay, let me share with you a story I like.

My fire swords are based on a design from my friend Howard, and I have traveled around the world and that's the best fire sword design I've ever seen. Howard is a practicing physician. He's also a big, burly asian dude with a crazy beard and long hair.

He has a costume that he uses for fire performances that is a long black trenchcoat. When he brandishes his fire swords, he looks like something straight out of an anime - a cyberpunk samurai with giant flaming swords.

Because Howard is a doctor, he's often the one who volunteers to do first aid at Burner events/hippie festivals - so at Burningman, with 50000 people, he was the head doctor on duty for awhile.

If anyone got hurt, they got a visit from the doctor in full cyberpunk samurai regalia, and it was glorious. Those hippies couldn't even tell if they were tripping or not.
