So that we don't confuse them with bananas, duh.  It does kinda imply that at some point, an Anglophone looked at that thing and said "it's an apple, but spiky like a pinecone", which raises a lot of questions.

Lithuanian is ananasas. But that's because "as" is masculine and every Lithuanian word must be masculine or feminine.

Not that I drink to get drunk at all, but I've probably had more vodka than any other alcoholic drink besides wine.

Would you know of any fine locally done work that gets exported to the US, Tomas?

Lithuanian Vodka (yes, just called that)
Sobieski (first Lithuanian vodka)

Don't know any other ones. Never actually tried vodka. And I don't know if they get imported to the US. Most of our export is cheese, beer and chocolate, but they don't get far as far as I know.

Edit: Also, Lithuanian trauktine is pretty good as far as I know. Tried translating it to English with a translator, didn't get any results. May be a national brew. It's kind of like vodka.

Edit: *stop* *fridge logic* MONKS DRINK VODKA!?

Oh my Buddha, people are so surprised to hear that an ex-monk does non-monk people things. :P

Buddhism is a mindful, meditative practice. Not a faith to be blindly followed or a philosophy just to be read about in books. A means of living to reduce our own suffering and to act in such a way that we reduce the suffering of those around us. True, lasting happiness not simply from fulfilling our desires is the goal. That's it.

We all forge our own paths. I still have a lot more to learn and teach before my path becomes one of the nameless again.

And thank you for the recommendations - I'll check them out.

Estonian is same family as Finnish.
I like Estonia.
Apparently, they wanted to change the internationally recognised name to Estland.
Dunno what came of that, though.
That's rather strange. "Estland" is the Scandinavian word for it. I figured the word in their own language would be something sounding more like Suomi or Ruotsi (Finland and Sweden respectively in Finnish, for those who do not know), and that they would like to change the name to that.
edit: Realised I could check it out myself just after I posted it. Wikipedia says it's "Eesti". Strange that they would not want it to be this. Are you sure it wasn't some sort of Estonia-Swedish nationalists or something? :P

They do have a Swedish minority there left since the "Imperial" era. Perhaps it's since the Viking colonisationary times, even, but I kinda doubt it. Regardless, it got hit pretty badly by the Soviet "occupation" and is diminishing now. Estonian Swedish is a dying language.

Estonia is a completely different world than Lithuania and Latvia. Doesn't really matter, we're going bankrupt soon and there are a few countries that want our lands. South is probably going to belong to Poland ("Wilno nasze" and all that shit), east is going to belong to Russia (USSR and all that shit) and the North is going to belong to Sweden (no idea why, but it's a known fact that they want our lands).

Edit: And oddly, no one really wants Latvia. Maybe Russia?
We don't want any of it, it's just our banks that want all your moneys. :P
Swedbank pretty much screwed Estonia('s economy) in a "miniature" way, the same way the world was screwed over by the Big Players before the big crash. They completely lost all credibility in Sweden for their business actions and how badly they dealt with it, both abroad and at home. Now they're marketing themselves as the Trustworthy Company, Always Thinking About the Customers First and Always Planning for the Long Run. Yeah right. Such a waste of a beautiful logo.

The Australian language is basically made up, on the spot, as we go, and it works.
Right on ya, pommy English's a loada fuckin' crock. Real fuckin' blokes doon't yabber like cunty whingebags.

All I learned from my Aussie friend was Australian language. :P and to drop 'fuck' into every other phrase.

My standard greeting as a supermarket cashier is 'wahya?' (How are you?). Nobody born in Australia has any trouble understanding this. It's wonderful.

Same reason they applied for membership with The Nordic Council, they want to be considered Nordic, like Finland, and like Finland is known as Finland and not a latin or finno-ugric spelling internationally, they had a discussion about going for Estland aswell.

Pfft. The only people who care about all that "Wilno nasze" crap is the Lithuanian nationalists that need somebody to antagonize against. Last time any Pole wanted a piece of your country was in that short period between the great wars when Piłsudski dreamt his dreams of power.
Seriously, this is a non-issue in Poland. We don't want your land.

Wut? Must be two types with the same name. I'm SURE there's a Lithuanian vodka with the same name.
