You know how I was having trouble getting the uif to not be mean? Man, it was so worth it.
This gives me equal mixes of daaaaw and lolwut.
When DF groundhogs gain sentience and advanced technology.
Plus, their name is just a letter off from these guys.
Actually, they kinda remind me of "The Ultimate Evil" that the Spathi were hiding from underground.
Which were harmless, fluffy, teddy-bear looking things.
Given the intro text, I wonder if it's a shout-out to that.
That would actually be awesome if it was intended as a Starcon shout-out.
Ever since playing and getting disappointed by the Duke Nukem Forever demo, it did actually get me thinking about if Toys For Bob have gotten around to getting a real Starcon 3 developed. From a handful of background info I collected from the Ultronomicon, fanterpretations delving into the story deeper, and playing Starcon 2 again, a sequel involving *above* and *below* with the Arilou and Orz as a focused element of the story could yield in some extra-dimensional craziness. You (Captain Zelnick/[YOUR_NAME_HERE]) of the (Vindicator/[YOUR_SHIP_HERE]) Mark II (or upon finding the Mark II) and using that behemoth to take on extra-dimensional elder gods (which word of God states the Orz are) would make an epic story, and having to use *Above*, *Below*, truespace and hyperspace for travel, and with today's computer power... holy crap, they gotta get on the ball with that.
Let's not forget, could we possibly find Androsynth refugees and revive them? Are the Taalo really gone? Who else can we find *above* and *below* our dimensions besides the Arilou and the real Orz entity? Does the Ur-Quan's universal paranoia delve deeper than just the initial Dynarri threat that hit them eons ago? Is there more than the one Sa-Matra? Can we use one of our own besides the Mark II? Is there more to the Pkunk's clairvoyance that can help us out more than we expect? What does the Ultron really do, and what is the Utwig's additional roles with it now in their hands in one piece again? Is it a weapon to combat the Orz influence? This is stuff I want to see in the real Star Control 3 story.
All this is also getting me thinking of DF modding in at least some of these Star Control races. Taalo are a rock-like race, as are also the Chenjesu; Ur-Quan are essentially sentient megabeast caterpillars, and quite intelligent and numerous; Yehat are the avian elven race with noble behaviors and are ace fighters, Vux are hostile towards humans because we look hideous to them (dwarves probably included), the list goes on. The
Ultronomicon could be used for referencing for the modding. I suppose this paragraph should belong to the DF Modding board. But I'll leave it here anyway. The city-building stuff Toady's been working on (if can be altered in raws as well) could work awesomely for race-specific builds; depending on just how customizable the city-building code can get.
EDIT:
Looking back, I think the
Thraddash are probably the most dwarven race, considering they keep advancing to crazy-advanced levels, and then knocking themselves back into the stone age on a pretty regular basis (knocking themselves back 100-500 years or something). Sounds very dwarven to me.
