I guess I'm the only one who thinks Mozilla was being a bit smarmy there.  I agree with their intent and actions - if ICE wants Mozilla to stop performing a legal business, they need an injunction, not just saying "hey stop that".  But did Mozilla really have to call it "MAFIAA Fire", as a big middle-finger to ICE?  If nothing else, that's just asking for trouble.

I was just recalling a very nice hole I dug a week or two ago, I might even call it a perfect hole. There was quite a bit of ash in the air that day as well, and that wasn't very pleasant. But other than that, everything about that day was fantastic, and the hole was doubleplusfantastic.

Oh, okay.  I just thought that it was sort of funny that in a joke about "now I understand how women feel" (thus indicating some sort of understanding), they themselves engaged in one of the standard tactics to... demean women.  Especially because, you know, that'd basically be a fairly good message for a woman to receive on one of those sites, compared to standard fare.  Especially because, if you read to the bottom of her profile, you'll see that she's put up measures against receiving messages like "hey sexy" or "hey babe," as though she knew that were something she had to contend with--and indeed, her opening rejoinder speaks to character rather than physical characteristics.  There is no mention of race.  Shocking.

But you know, we don't make comics about it, because it's par for the course.

I understand the issue you put forth, but the situation is a delicate one.  It's one thing to say "I will date an Asian guy and I don't care who he is, because I want to date an Asian" (my "best friend" was this sort of person, who seemed to have a serious dosage of treating people like meat) and another one to say "I'd like to see what dating someone from Asia would be like.  Let's see if I can find someone compatible and make a good match."

Because, you know, I'm not going to say that all guys who aren't genderblind are misogynist and treat women like meat, just as I'm not going to malign white people who express interest in dating people of color (especially around here, where there's more Asians than white people).

. . . Should I?  I'm white, so please educate me: would it be incorrect to express such an interest, in your point of view?

People of color obviously have different experiences from white people, and I imagine--since I cannot know--that they may find themselves often treated like meat, or as lesser people, or as "othered" individuals.  And that really sucks.  At the same time, I'm not quite sure that the comic exactly was paying attention to some of its arguments.

I was actually really pointing at the "I get how women feel!!1 they must all act like this one!11" because I've seen this happen, so many times. Middle school, the best place to watch romantic train-wrecks happen (by romantic, I mean men trying to hit on women and then failing really hard.)

I don't really know much about being treated badly. I'm a middle class white male of no particular geographical standing! The only thing you can really say about me is that I'm a complete prick to everyone I know and anyone I consider a stupid filthy redneck (caution, that statement may be offense to some of you who like to lump themselves under the novelty sign demographic).

I am certain the oh-so-sensitive "go be fat/unattractive someplace else" is certainly not gender specific. Speaking as a guy who alternates not-giving-a-shit about appearances/looks like a hippie bum and alternately dressing up/looking nice, it's simply amazing how much bullshit you can get away with in the world just by appearing attractive. Heck, movie and pop-stars.

Denigrating slurs such as whore or slut are a whole other can of worms, as among males our counterpart "man-whore" is generally regarded as a herp-derp positive alpha male trait, highfives and brofists all around, naturally. And then some of our insults for each other are 'feminizing' terms like bitch.

As for the race thing, it is not a problem if you don't ooze "I'm fascinated by X-race and I have yellow/jungle/whatever fever" at every pore. Although I'm darkly amused by my female asian friends who exasperatedly tell guys who are into anime and have yellow fever to fuck off. There are some things better left unspoken.
