Hmm... I enjoyed the crazy story, and I honestly didn't think Squall was a Gary Stu at all.  He was insensitive on the outside, sensitive on the inside, and generally just kind of immature.  The timing... yeah, that's true, but you can get high crit rates with other characters, and I've had him miss pleeeeenty of times.

I would sort of hope that the main character, who ended up being the military commander of an academy, would have the best stat growths--because it definitely wasn't his personality =/

And yeah, I kind of like that theory, too.

Perhaps I should rescind what I said about Squall being a Gary Stu, in that he didn't act like one, but was treated like one. He has no presence, speaking ability, or leadership ability, but is thrust into the role of leader at every opportunity. He is as immature as a child, with an inexcusable lack of social skills and the tendency to throw tantrums, and yet is the subject of the game's most prominent romance. After disc one, all other characters miraculously lose their depth as Squall steals the spotlight and never lets it go. I just feel the game suffered for it, is all, it's still a great game

Plus, there were several loose-ends that were simply never tied up. The biggest being Empress Ultimecia's existence, since the game never really mentions her until the very end, and we simply never learn who she is or why she's so very crazy. I also like the fan theory that she's actually Rinoa, who having obtained the power of a witch, gained immortality and pro-retroactively time paradoxes the events of the story into place when she goes insane a 1000 years into the future.

I can understand enjoying the bizarre story though, it's something that keeps you entertained even if it doesn't make sense. The particular style the game, the mixture of pixelated characters and hand-drawn backgrounds, lended itself well to telling the story as it became more grandiose and outrageous with time.

Eyes on Me is an awesome song as well.

I'll have to admit that the political plot wasn't really for me, though.  I usually like the plot to be more character-development-etc.-centric, and there were really no memorable side characters at all... oh, well.  It's not like XIII was reputed to be much better =/

Interesting! It was that plotline that really did it for me, actually. I loved the plot in that game whenever Vaan wasn't involved. I actually think I liked it better than 6 (very slightly), which had been my favorite until then. It was some of the NPCs that I found most interesting, oddly.

Either that or it was the fact that it was basically Star Wars in Ivalice. Anyway, hopefully this doesn't stop being the Final Fantasy thread before I hit post.

EDIT: Goddamn it. Why did I have to type that last sentence. I swear every time I do that I utter Unquestionable Prophecy.

Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”

Well, actually, I did like Vayne and Cid, and I thought Balthier's story was kind of awesome.  Somehow, though, I thought everything could have been fleshed out so much more... sidequests for more backstory, and stuff like that.

*sigh*

I miss the symbolic character designs of FFVIII and Vivi.

Gods, this. The Hunt Board or whatever it was called was a poor substitute for proper world-building side-quests. That's my major beef with the game, which was that you had the main plot and then you had a bunch of quests where you go murder something (or several somethings) with little to no context. AND THE TRADING QUESTS WITH THE MARKET PLACE. Whyyyyyyy do you want 8 Burning Wolf Hearts or whatever. They have like a 2% drop rate even once I've got a huge chain going, and fetch quests are bad enough with a 100% drop rate.

Also, I can agree with you on the character designs. And even more also, Vivi was awesome.

Yeah, I think that was what I really felt was lacking.  For a game, FFXII was excellent.  For what I expected from a Final Fantasy Entry, I felt all the special things the FF series typically brought in to bulk up the storytelling and plot were missing.  Symbolism, bizarre characters, heartbreak, humor, explored backstories, weird shipping, world-destruction, free flying, useless items, little trips into various people's mental structures, and all of that was what I really liked.

Enough with the jrpgs please or I will sit here and just talk about how dnd is SO much better graphically and entertaining.

Okay.

Polite requests are a lot more effective if they don't have "threats" tacked alongside.  Also, I am not especially fond of D&D, so you will have to be extraordinarily convincing.

Yup!  Didn't finish it, but I played through almost the entire thing.  It was great, and I loved Toriyama's character designs.
