My geology professor is like that.  He let me turn in lab prep questions (Which, according to the syllabus, must be turned in before the lab begins or you get a 0 on the lab and can't participate) a week late because I'd already done them and just didn't have them on me.

My programming professors loved me, mostly because I actually tried to be syntax-literate and didn't treat the computer like a Magic Glowy-Light Box.  The first adored my ability to read ahead in the textbook and invent lateral (read: overengineered) solutions to problems, mostly through massive feature-expansion of example programs and excessive numbers of While-loops.  The second professor hated my work ethic, and the screwing around I got up to, but quickly learned to stop criticizing my work when it rapidly evolved beyond either of our capacities to understand, and yet continued to produce optimal results.  She outright said on a couple occasions that, looking at printouts of my code, that it simply should not have functioned.

Pity I forgot absolutely everything I learned within one semester of being out of programming.
