Meh, all roguelikes are pretty much the same. Hard to tell.

I find that very odd coming from someone who plays crawl and elona, which are both way different than traditional rougelikes.

Crawl is on par with Elona.
But they're both good for different reasons, so it's hard to compare.

You're forgetting IVAN.

I like Elona more, it's very cute and twisted. Although I remain loyal to DF as king of them all.

Right now I'm failing at the seven day rogulike challenge, making a game called 'Snake story'

IVAN doesn't count.
It's not a roguelike.
It's a futility simulator.

Really?
I've never gotten so far in any other roguelike and not due to lack of trying.
There's still LIVAN which is a bit easier, due to having more content.

There is no way to win IVAN without cheating.
The game is literally engineered such that you can't win without cheating.

Isn't that the idea of a the traditional roguelike, to punch you in the face with a tricky interface, followed up by a kick to the privates with hard gameplay under the hood?

Yes, but most of them have at least a sliver of legitimate winnability.
Like I said, IVAN is literally unwinnable.

Somebody once won it. They reported it as a bug.

As in end boss can only be damaged by a hax weapon, or you need to cross a chasm and you need to cheat to get wings and fly over? Or you can win, but you need to use scientific notation to show the chance of winning?

I think it has something to do with exponential scaling in the difficulty of the mobs.
So probably that last one.
Though, I beat it by cheating, so it doesn't really matter.

Do mobs scale with player level, or dungeon level? Because the first one would mean you need to play it stealthy and not kill stuff, the other means kill everything and grind like a boss.

There are several ways of 'ascending'. I managed to reach the easiest one, which would be slaying the enner beast.

Replacing Petrus however is just sick. You need godlike luck for that.

A mix of player level, dungeon level, equipment and player properties.
This way the game can screw you over at any time.

Most of the time it's the random combat, that does the trick...

Oh, IVAN! I remember that game! I blame the limb loss mechanics. Imagine any roguelike with DF combat. Where a lucky mook on the first level could rip your arm off and you would stay armless for the whole game.
