It does take a DC 30 Strength check to move, which requires you to be, at minimum, capable of lifting 1600 pounds over your head, and even then it only works 5% of the time.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

No. You press a button and then it can resist something like 5000 pounds of force. And it sotra floats there.

Ah, thats a very heavy thing, it reminds me when someone had a wand of wall of iron.

Guess what they used it for.

Looks like 8000 pounds. I'm not sure I want to know what it was used for, except possibly for making a quantity of iron worth more than the cost of the wand.

If you are super rich you can put them in the corners of your rooms to make a floating castile.

Someone should run a campaign entirely on creative uses of artifacts like that. No weapons, no spells, just items and uses they were not intended for.

I wonder how long that player would last.

I'm playing Dwarf Fortress again.

I am currently up to my ears in badgers, booze, meat, and green glass, and IT IS AMAZING.

I once tried playing a game like this with my friends.
'Twas a bunch of scholars running around ancient ruins looking for zappy bits with which to zap each other, like a group of college students with access to ancient high-level magic.
Much fun was had.

One fun thing to do if you like being a bad DM is to treat the rod as being immovable from its absolute position, rather than relative.  In other words, you hit the button and the rod is catapulted into space at the orbital speed of your home planet.  Say goodnight to anything on the wrong side of it.

But that would lead to enterprising players using it to take out your bad guy. and that makes adventures boring.
