The last word of a sentence is an important one, it gets a lot of focus. I think it just sounds better followed by the itself regardless of any considerations about meaning. If I were to drop the itself I'd probably word it like this:

". . .hearkening back to slavery, our nation's great unhealing wound."

Otherwise the clauses seem kind of unbalanced.
