Gandalf can wield a 2 handed weapon in one hand and a medium weapon in the other and get an extra attack per round out the deal because the two handed weapon is a double weapon.

Actually, Tolkien had Beren and Luthien written on his & his wife's graves.  Perhaps Gandalf acts more as the proxy voice of the author, but still

He's more awesome in the books anyway.  Every character is, actually, without any exception I can think of.  And dwarves aren't abused as comic relief... except for Bombur.  He's the only one.  Out of dozens.
