I was happy to see that an old internet friend has not only been following through on a long-standing art project of his, but in fact turned it into a really exciting game project designed for the MUGEN platform. It's everything Super Smash Bros. should have been, with original art/music/voice acting, great care paid to creating the mechanics, and all sorts of love that went into representing characters from the entirety of game history.

They're including iconic characters from every notable game series for consoles, and even PC games of yore. More than 100 characters appear in some fashion, including Guybrush Threepwood, Alex Kidd, Sparkster, Dr. Robotnik, Etna, and the Worms (plus Holy Hand Grenade). The ability to pit Master Chief against Samus Aran, or hold a tag-team match with Megaman X and Kos-Mos versus Chrono and Cloud is just really fun.

Nethack:

Me, valkyrie, vs. four water moccasins.  All I've got on me in the way of consumables is two unidentified potions.  I run to a doorway and lose like half my health in the process.  I start taking them on one at a time, watching my health wither away.  Tyr abandons me and doesn't heal me or anything when I pray.  I'm down to one HP so I figure I might as well quaff my potions, if they suck I'm dead either way.  Quaff the first one, potion of healing.  Up to 20 hp, I manage to finish off the last of the moccasins.

Problem, all that poison has me down to 7 strength, and I'm a valkyrie.  Quaff, potion number 2, it's a blessed potion of restore ability.

Hell yeah.

The RNG giveth and the RNG taketh away.  It mostly just takes away, so I kinda gave up on it.


I have to fill out loads of copies of stupid forms, to apply for jobs.  I thought, "fuck, I don't have computer lab access anymore, and I don't want to ask anyone if I can use their printer".  And then I remembered that I'm not a cheapass college student anymore.  I'm a goddamned adult and I have money, I can just go down to Best Buy and get a printer (although every printer I ever bought for myself turned out to be a piece of junk).  What an empowering feeling.

Then I looked in the corner where I planned to put a printer, and saw the unopened printer-in-a-box that I bought the last time I said I should just get one for myself, and then filed away as so much meaningless junk.  I should be miffed with myself for such slobbishness, but hey, retroactive empowerment, and I don't have to buy anything.

And yeah, the RNG took away.  Fuck you Tyr, when I'm in the red and surrounded by monsters I'm not praying to say hi.  I'll play a knight or something from now on.

Soma: Can you say "lockdown potential"? I think it's a really bad idea to have guard crush mechanics in a game like this.

That aside, it's certainly good to see something fairly creative to come out of MUGEN again. Most long-term projects die within months.

There need to be more violent media franchises where the protagonists and antagonists are all old as Hell.  Flex some creative muscle, it's certainly an original idea.
