I've only seen season 1 of Haruhi and in regular order, not novel order or whatever bizarre order they speak of, and I heard nightmare stories about 'endless 8' in season 2.

Anyway, my favorite episode has to be when the brigade plays a space sim over LAN against the computer club. I love how immersed they get into such a simple looking game. One of the many episodes that shows how much Yuki Nagato kicks ass.

She freaking hacks into the LAN game rewriting the entire game code to lock the computer club out of their little "dev-mode" cheat to balance the odds, and thanks to controlling 50+ squads of ships at the same time, coordinates an attack pattern that destroys them in seconds.

Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that she's playing and hacking simultaneously, and hacking with MS-DOS as well?

About endless eight, just skip episodes 2-8 and watch 9. YOu won't miss anything, as you might've guessed, except for maybe some fan service.

Just a funny thought, I wonder if it's possible to synchronize all 8 episodes by playing them all at the same exact time. That would cut my viewing time for season 2 to 1/8 at least. (correction, 1/6 then)

Chances are likely some youtuber (or similar) did something like that. I do remember a compilation video of scenes from each episode playing 1 scene at a time, times 8 (exact scene + variations). Would make an interesting drinking game. Take a drink for anything that hasn't changed between episodes. Take an additional drink per episode. Drink the bottle if you kept count.

Episode 2 and 9 are the ones which would mess up the synchronization. The other 6 might work though.

If I recall from Tropes and wherever else I heard the other stuff about it, I think it's to make you feel sympathy for poor Yuki, since she's the one in the groundhog day loop, full-time. By means, the entire series until the endless 8, and the 8 is where the reset button gets hit.

Of yourse, this is kinda fridge brilliance. Yuki wasn't the only one who had to rewatch the entire thing over and over again.
Only we were lucky. We skipped most of it.
