Just had one of the most awesome commutes ever. The ice storm is turning epic. On top of the solid sheet of ice that built up lastnight, there is now 3 or 4 inches of very fine sleet. Everything is beautiful, and I enjoy driving in the stuff, too.
So I was admiring this and listening to some winter appropriate metal on my way back to work from lunch, which was also special since a friend is staying with us unexpectedly after his flight was cancelled due to weather (we live near the airport).
Suddenly I saw the entire horizon towards Indianapolis light up in a bright teal color. It was one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen in the sky. I had no idea what to make of it. At about the halfway point, it happened again. Music off. Window slightly rolled down. WTF is that. Nothing again for a few minutes.
Then the last few minutes of the drive, I start seeing these flashes frequently. After studying the rhythm of them and a couple actually appear overhead, I finally figure out that it's lightning. The sky is just a really wierd color and very overcast so I can't actually see the lightning, and the light filters through in a really strange way. It also doesn't make any sound, and the light brightens and fades really slowly somehow.
Then lights start flashing. All of them. Flickering in and out. Surrounding buildings. Stop lights. Put together with the silent teal lightshow in the sky. It's quite a sight. Very cinematic.
Then the lights finally go out just before I get back to the office. We're running on generator here right now. Lights are out to conserve energy. Nothing is on but the computers. My eyes are so comfortable. Usually this place is so obnoxiously overblown with light it's almost painful.
I call home and they haven't lost power yet, and haven't shown any signs of doing so.
Everything is win.
