Oddly enough, I've seen avatars on this forum that are larger. Apparently people get the idea that a giant-ass 4-megabyte GIF is a good idea for a forum avatar, even if the viewer's browser shrinks it down to 100 pixels wide. And god forbid anyone is on dial-up.

Yeah those GIFs are annoying, thank gods for Adblock, but you still sometimes miss them and sit in another tab wondering why the page won't load.

I think the issue is when people don't shrink the avatars, so it's a 500x500 gif that gets autoshrunk by forum software.
It's still 500x500, it's just displaying smaller.

I don't bother with trying to get my avatar to look good so I always crop it to 80x80 and always try keeping it under 15kb now.  I've seen people that somehow get 500x1000 avatars look good like WorkerDrone's old imperial whatever the hell guy.  I remember viewing the image and I was like woah it filled up my whole monitor I couldn't even tell it looked avatar sized and not pixelated at all.

Yeah, Itnetlolor made that version specifically for my avatar; there was an avatar meme about smiles a while back. Then Nivm or someone PMed me to say they preferred the old version, and I realised I agreed.
