The RROD is caused by the machine overheating and causing a couple of the solder connections to melt. This can cause the connection to break, possibly disabling your Xbox. Hitting it might make the broken solder junction touch again, but watch out; if it starts arcing because the connection isn't perfect, the circuitboard around the connection could fry.

Just spent 500 or so dollars on a computer, a DVD burner and a keyboard.

They are arriving in either 3-5 days, or 6-10. There was a 3-5 day estimate on the shipping, and a warning to say that shipping may be delayed 3-5 days, but I don't know if the shipping estimate included the delay or not.
