They say it's good for warding off illness in cold weather. I lost track of how many Chinese friends I mention this stuff to that go, "Oh yeah, my grandfather drinks that every winter...."

So now I sort think of it as Snake Nog. Hmm...now if only I could find some without having to fly back to China to get it (and get it back in the US without CBE, FDA, and a host of other agencies screaming at me).

EDIT: Oh, and baijiu (the rice vodka base) is generally terrible, terrible stuff so the Chinese have become masters of flavoring it with random shit. One of my favorite (although I've never gotten to try it) being yu bing shao ju, literally "jade/meat ice cube wine" -- rice vodka flavored with a large square hunk of pork fat. I'm kind of amazed that this wasn't invented seperately in the Southern US. I mean, it's moonshine with fatback in it, how much more Southern can you get??
