No really, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.  Everyone else is just blowing me out of the water with their first-loop runs.  Maybe I should prod adventurers around dungeons more, and save money on buying stock.  But I never get any good stuff to sell, just buttloads of Chestnuts and Worn Swords.  Obviously I prune out for the best stuff, but it's never much, and it's time consuming.

I guess I just wasn't cut out to run a magic tax-free small-lot pawn shop in a comical pastiche fantasy world.

Not really. First of all, you have to unlock the dungeons first, and the early ones aren't very deep. Second, you can only carry so much stuff out of the dungeon per trip. Third: The loot from dungeons is actually pretty worthless. You can make a lot more without even touching the things.
