Oh yeah. Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is the shmup I'm always told should be played first. I'd try it, but I fucking suck at those.

I only got as far as I could before reaching Bladespam McMaid. Lost my remaining continues against her.

Yeah, I got Embodiment, and I only managed to beat it on Easy.  I'm sure I'll beat Normal with no continues some day... at the moment Patchouli is kicking my butt.

UFO is the latest of the normal ones.
It has the best ZUN-style art and you have to collect UFOs.
Plus it has Murasa and Nue.
As for order, if I remember correctly, they're supposed to be chronological, so EoSD, but they're not connected to each other too heavily, so it doesn't matter if you play them out of order.
If you really want to go old school, Highly Responsive to Prayers is the first game.
But you need a PC-98 emulator and it's not danmaku.

Quick search says there isn't a Linux-native emulator, I'm not surprised. My PC might be able to handle emulator-in-emulator for the not-danmaku game, but it's too recursive for me to risk.

e: but it's older and kinda shitty, the specs do not tell the true story. it will likely overheat because it tries to when i play vns in wine.
