In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

For kabocha, the skin is really thin so you just cut off any particularly barnacle-ish bits, scoop out the guts, cube it, and simmer it in the coconut milk with whatever spices and vegetables you're using until it's soft.  If you get it too soft it can be kind of gross, but it's mostly edible.

Friend of mine was told she might have cancer but it turns out it was just a tiny tumor that can be cured with some pills.

My boss just came in and told me that I'm not going home at 6 like I'd planned, instead I'm staying in for a couple more hours.

Why is this a happy thing?  Well...because it was actually a warning of "I-520 is completely blocked because Seattle drivers are useless in snow, and if you left now, you'd be waiting for them to clear accidents out of the way for two hours anyway".  So instead of freezing in my boring car, I'm in a nice warm office, racking up spare hours so I can go home early tomorrow.  I approve.

I thought they counted as one of them Northern States That Know How To Drive In The Snow, like Michigan.
