Fucking floating continents man. How do they work?

Really though. Trying to find out how floating continent like places look is a little trickyer than I thought. Suddenly I realize that very little things you can use to help make grounded continents and things work doesn't work here.

What I don't get is why floating continents/islands always have conical bottoms, like a giant golf divot.  You'd think it look more like an actual island.  For that matter, you never hear about the effects of giant shadows moving over land, or the monstrous katabatic wind along the leading edge of the flying land.


In other news, today was boring as Hell, and didn't get any more interesting when I met Bill White.  But I asked for the night off of work, and I'm trying valiantly not to feel sorry for my coworkers.

Of course, that's entirely dependent on how it moves.  If it's geosynchronous, it would have some extra wind due to rotating slightly faster than the ground underneath, provided it's any appreciable distance up in the air.  If it moves relative to the ground, at any speed one would actually notice, then you'll get lots of wind, unless it's just trailing the Earth's rotation at wind speed, which would make sense because Lord knows what kind of wind-resistance a flying continent would have.

I've actually put some thought into this, when I tried to work out the wind-speed math relative to trying to land an airplane on a floating island.

I'm honestly intending for mostly stationary landmasses. But some of which have smaller non-stationary ones around them. The huge ones being supported by a network of large indestructible pillar like things and the others magically animated.
