Had a pretty cool battle in Empire total war earlier..
Was me (Spain) vs Portugal, I had invaded and was sacking towns in the area with the Royal Army trying to bait their army out so I could strike, however for some reason the Portuguese army pulled out of Lisbon and instead set up shop in their port, probably hoping I'd settle in for a siege at which point they could use their garrison (Darth mod gives towns pretty good size garrisons when you siege a town) as an anvil and their army as a hammer. However the Royal Army knew that their best chance to strike at Portugal was now, and so they attacked.
The Royal Spanish Army consisted of about 2200 troops, with a moderately strong infantry division, some old demi-cannons, and a relatively large cavalry wing of 400 Horse.
The Portuguese Garrison consisted of 3000 troops, all infantry about half being line infantry with the other half being militia support.
The battle began with me holding back and letting the bombard them from a distance, meanwhile I sent my Spanish Bandits out to probe their defenses. (Spanish bandits being a group of 120 Horsemen with a sword and a pistol.) They conducted a few hit and run attacks while I planned my attack, the bandits eventually tired and were low on ammo so I pulled them back into some trees. I then began maneuvering my troops to prepare for the main attack to begin. Knowing that head to head my infantry would probably get trounced ... I decided to commit a full scale cavalry charge against their line with the hope that they would at least be able to lessen the enemy numbers, moral and maybe (If Portugal had researched them) cause their troops to apply plug bayonets and be useless in a firefight.
Alll 400 horse charged the enemy line, with the bandits coming in from the flank... it was pure epic, the enemy line opened fire but for the most part... missed, though a few horses did get a musket ball to the face. While they were charging, my infantry followed rushing to get into musket range for the followup attack.
The charge was beyond successful, Portuguese broke as the horses swarmed their line.. as one unit broke the horses would go onto the next one, breaking them, only 1-3 enemy units actually managed to get into a firefight with my troops but a couple musket barrages sent them running home.
