Those have already been applied, in fact (page and a half of meandering, arc-building, and concept development).  I typically work best when going between pen-and-notebook, mechanical-pencil-and-paper, typewriter, and computer.  So, we'll have to see when I end up in each stage.

Just be friendly?  If they're hitting on you, then you probably don't want to mess with that over the internet, anyway.  If they're actually one of your friends, then going "hey why are you hitting on me" probably won't go over too well.

Keep 'em talking, try to gather more data, and ask your other friends if they know the individual.  That should do it.

Hey now, I personally know 3 people who've started/maintained perfectly functional relationships based on online friendships. However, in this case, it's most likely someone pulling your leg. So generally speaking, your options are limited to:

1. Go on with your conversation, ignoring their advances.
2. Converse until you find out who it is. After this is discovered, reveal that you know.
3. Play along until you manage to weird them out.

Recommendations:
Combine 1 + 2 for most sensible results.
Combine 2 + 3 for most awesome results.
