if the virus has made any significant administrative level changes, I just say fuck it and reformat.
If this was in the DF tagline thread, it would probably be like this:
Reformatting: Because Pyrric victories are still technically a win for you.

I prefer Pyrrhic victories to taking it in the bum from stuff that's beyond my knowledge level. Reformatting is the only way I can return to a modicum of sanity, even knowing there's a 50% chance stuff I care about was already compromised.

There are tons of things that could be said for reformatting.
Reformatting: Because fuck you virus, I still have the hard drive.
Reformatting: Did you really think that would work out well for you, virus?
Reformatting: Screw with my computer? Ha ha ha, no.
Reformatting: I wonder what this function does?

Avira Antivir: because I prefer to stop virus problems before they start.

I just use AVG and MalwareBytes to clean up after it. :)
Heck, Malwarebytes even managed to get rid of those nasty fake antivirus ones.

Reformatting: Try blocking this, virus!

I'd switch if I were you. Avira antivir is full of fail. Seriously. Six months ago I got Virut, which OLD, and it failed to detect it. (For the record: malware bytes failed to detect it too. AVG and Avast detected it just fine. I went for Avast because it's less resource-intensive)

I haven't had any visible virus during the entire time I've had this extremely old computer and operating system. My father suggested that I have one of the types of infection that acts as a firewall for others. However, unlike a bot that would do such, there are no signs of activity when I leave my computer alone with internet for extending periods of time.
Am I really just that lucky?

Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Nah. Viruses are easy to avoid most of the time. There's a good chance you'll never see one if you are careful about what sites you visit.

I always manually delete them.
It's so much easier.

A: Yes. Go to a DOS prompt and type "format c:". Any problems you are experiencing will cease within a few minutes.

I would feel bad for someone who did that without knowing the results, but everyone really should know what that will do.

I doubt it, but I'm not willing to try.
