The whole reason the Friend Zone exists is that they do coexist, in at least one person, but acting on both at once is a total no-no.  That's what I can't figure out.

In between the hours of 12 PM and 7 AM, the residents of Bay 12 have managed to not only find incriminating evidence that Macguyver raped Nitori, but also evidence that Touhou was responsible for the WTC disaster and the pussification of Iron Man. Jackrabbit friend-zoned some poor girl, and a argument was begun on the possible coexistance of platonic and romantic feelings in a relationship.

If you're friends, you have something to lose.  If you're not friends with the girl you like there's nowhere to go but up.  If she rejects you, oh well.

If you're friends, though, and she says no, you've added a whole new destructive variable to the friendship, and things could get awkward fast. 

I think guys friendzone girls more than they realize, and I bet if there were some counter added to each person's brain that shows how many people they've friendzoned, a lot of the awkward guys who get mad because they're lonely would kill themselves.

What I'm trying to say is, don't develop feelings for friends and there won't be a problem.  You can't climb both ladders at the same time, and if you switch over to the relationship ladder and fall off, you probably can't get back on the friendship ladder.  The best option is to forget about relationships with the person or forget about friendships with them.

If relationships naturally grew out of friendships, there would be a lot fewer high school nerds complaining on forums about how their female friend (And they always take care never to say girl friend, they always say female friend or friend who is a girl) is always dating jerks who don't respect her like I do.
