The vampires corner them and the vampire girl behind plexiglass and start slamming into it.  Finally, the alpha male smears his hand on the glass to make a butterfly shape.  Turns out the vampire girl is his mate.  They open the door, the alpha male commands the vampires to leave Will alone, and he wheels her out, unhooks the serum, and revives her.  The alpha male and his girlfriend share a weird tender moment where they growl and moo all over each other and the alpha male starts to carry her away.

He looks at Will, and they kind of connect.  Will mutters "I'm sorry" and the alpha male seems to understand.  The vampires leave, and Will looks over at all the pictures of vampires he's experimented on, realizing that they fear and loathe him as much as he fears and loathes them.  That's why it's called I am Legend, because to them, he's the monster that comes out in the daytime and kills them.

The test audience didn't like it though, so they replaced it with a lame sacrifice ending

Yeah, while I can understand why Hollywood did it, it really ruined the point of the story. And a lot of the depth for me.

The dog, though, oh man. That was really heartbreaking.

It also ruins a bunch of stuff in the movie, like Fred's moving around, the trap, the alpha male coming out into the sun and giving Will that hate-glare.

Jeez, that's some different movie now. It's even more extreme case than the one with the Blade Runner.

That ending was really frigging stupid. I don't see why they thought totally changing the ending in a way that severed all ties with the original story and retroactively makes everything not make sense was a good thing.
