My first Colonel in X-Com is a sniper by the name of Simba "Cyclops" Mensah. That is his actual, randomly generated name. He hails from X-Com's home nation of Nigeria. I was considering replacing "Cyclops" with "Bad Motherfucker", but I just can't bring myself to mess with it.

He also sniped a Sectoid Leader from halfway across the map. Through the entirety of a crashed UFO. And killed it. With an unupgraded sniper rifle. And he was only on Overwatch because I was giving the injured half of the team something to do while the other half finished the mission.

So, I just got back from the local community college. The guy at the financial aid desk today was one of my friends from high school, so shit actually got done today. I have to check back tomorrow to find out whether or not I'm eligible for next semester. Also, in the academic advising office, I was told that I need 19 credit hours of absolutely anything to finish an associate's degree in general studies, which will then let me get a halfway-decent-paying job (a lot of employers are just looking for a degree, any degree,) which will let me pursue a bachelor's in english/journalism/various sciences.

So, my schooling is nearly complete, and I seem to be back on the right track.

Hate to break it to you but the nicknames aren't picked out in an entirely random way. They're picked out based on what they do in missions, so snipers tend to pick up eye themed nicknames like "Deadeye" or "Hawk", which I think they get for performing long shots, and supports tend to get names like "Angel" or "Whiskey", for healing people. I've heard there's ones for using explosives to blow up aliens, for using the skeleton suit to grapple onto buildings, and for a variety of other things.

I know they aren't random. I like Simba Mensah far more than I do the nickname, hence why I am considering replacing it.

I'm honestly not entirely sure how it works, I could be wrong, but I've heard that it's based off of what your soldiers do in combat, which would match up with my experiences.

I think what it is is that you have a random chance to earn a certain thematic nickname based on what happens in their missions and what their loadout is.
