...What. How does that even work.

The start menu is now a fullscreen app.

In a sense. By default on startup you're treated to what is essentially a giant iphone display with all your favorite apps, including one which takes you to the desktop. I got a fix to kill that and boot to desktop, and another to restore the start menu as per earlier versions. But yes, the default is a massively unintuitive mess designed for Appleites. And frankly I'm not willing to give MS the benefit of the doubt re: shenanigans given how much effort they've put into getting rid of functionality in favor of the "Modern" (their words) OS. I might see if I can find a win7 install disk for cheap somewhere, though.

I'd throw you my set if I could.

Eh, the Win8 is the only thing I have a real complaint about, since this is the happy thread. I mean, I got a laptop with 8GB of RAM, a NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 660M, around 600GB of free hard drive space, and a display with 1920x1080 resolution for 1000USD. To boot, it has a nice matte finish, a solid keyboard, and a numpad. I'm not really in a position to be whining about it just because of Microsoft stupidity.

Gifts are nice, and I didn't have to pay for it because of giftyness, but look at that. You've got twice my RAM, a bigger screen (not that thats entirely helpful, more screen means more gpu power to use all of it), and something that actually counts as a graphics card in exchange for Windows 8 default instead of Win7.

Considering that I just upgraded from a computer that sounds exactly like yours (right down to being a gift that I shouldn't complain about), I offer my sympathy.

You do know that the windows key still toggles the Start menu, right? It makes Windows 8 a lot more bearable.

I've already downloaded a fix, so that's even more tolerable. There's even a bit of visual punnery (the Windows emblem is in the shape of a shell).

Also I went to a casino and lost some money. But it's okay, I had it set aside and all my holiday shopping is done.

More good news: Apparently there is an early build of Firefox for Win8 (the working name is 'Nightly' and it uses a sort of 'dark Earth with city light patterns' image for the icon). Thank goodness, now I don't have to live without adblock.

Huh. I've been using Nightly ever since I got this laptop (with Windows 7). It's like a 64-bit version of Firefox.

Nightly has been there for ages. Its just its not terribly used because the default is to be in the stable channel.

Wasn't aware of that. Shows how much I pay attention. It was the most up-to-date download for FFmetro I could find.
