The Bay 12 Space Program now has an obvious target:
A super-Earth composed mostly of diamond and graphite.

Quote
At least a third of the planet's mass is likely pure diamond.
Mind you, this is planet projected to have a mass 8.63 ± 0.35 that of Earth. So nearly three Earths worth of diamond.

Strike the stars!!

We would get assassinated by the DeBeers company.

That really describes any programming.

Not if we nuke them from orbit. Or maybe kinetic strikes. Bastards deserve it.

What if we organize an expedition to this planet so that they can properly inspect its reserves, and then an unfortunate accident occurs in which they are stranded on the surface?

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Pff, call me back when we find a planet made of coal. Diamond is meh.

But man, would I love to see an Earth where every square inch of every little and trivial thing is studded with space diamonds. Even if our future is ever increasingly apocalyptic, it will truly be the most blinging dystopia there ever was.

Suddenly, an incentive to produce smog, in order to cut down on the blinding glare that simply glancing out your window (also diamond-encrusted) will cause! Looks like industry is just ahead of the game, guys.

EDIT: Also, this is relevant to a discussion we were having a while back.

Hey, we could also have hollowed-out chunks of diamond as houses. No worries about throwing stones ever again.  :P

Let's see you try to throw stones through a three kilometer-thick diamond wall. It isn't visible from space; space is visible from it.

Obviously, the goal should be to cut the planet-sized diamond into several moon-sized focusing crystals that could turn sunlight into a permanent megalaser. And then have them all point at the bigger chunk of diamond leftover, which would focus it into a single Death Star-style  teralaser.

I have no idea what we would do with such a thing, but really.....if you have to ask WHY you would make a laser so big that you have to do planetary-level astroengineering to pull it off, you're missing the point.

At the very least we can always use it to power a really big particle accelerator.

We've got both the military and the science community covered. We'd just need the people who can actually fund getting there to see the point of it.

Panel 2 is all you need to know.
