So, I just finished writing some control software for a flamethrower and propane based air cannon that we're going to use at a local haunted hayride.  To verify that I still remember how to do binary masking and math, I tried dumping the values I was writing to my parallel port (hey, nobody uses it for printers anymore, so why not some other external circuitry?).

I giggled when I saw that the ASCII representation of the value used to control the flamethrowers was none other than ☺.  The symbol for the air cannon control line? ☻

At least I'll know I'm sending dwarves into the electronics that control the flames and explosions.

(Wish I had an image for them instead, but I'm pretty sure those are the same symbols as used by DF.  It was definitely the symbols that were printed in the console anyway, I had to get those from the character map.)

So lastnight I was reminded of the existence of Topogun.  Holy shit.  So much better than what I've been doing.  I wish I'd remembered this software weeks ago.

Fun fact: Did you know that you can relight a candle using the vapor trail created when you blow it out? I did, but I only just recently actually tried it out.

I made the most unattractive noises in my enthusiasm.

Eeeeeee guys I have a big happy!

Following my quest for friendship, I actually had a prolonged conversation with someone on the bus today! It wasn't a massive philosophical debate or anything, just idle chit chat (which I am normally terrible at, but for some reason today I was able to do it!) I hardly knew the person even though we are in the same year.  :o

Other than that, I didn't really 'make any friends' but I talked to people more than I usually do. After the initial awkwardness when everyone got into homeroom and they were all hugging each other like "ermahgerd I haven't see you in TWO WHOLE WEEKS" and I was just standing in the corner, everything was ok.

But I'm pooped now. This friend-making business is exhausting.

I made the mistake of getting hyped for Dishonored. Waiting two weeks is going to be hellish. I am not a patient man at the best of times....

Maybe I can just not drive as much for the next two weeks?

I am full of conflict. But happy, because The Drunken Whaler. And also tiredness.

My cat is snoring in my lap. It's really cute.

But I have no where to put my laptop comfortably and I don't want to wake him.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
