Neil Stephenson? That name sounds incredibly familiar but I cannot place it. Pretty sure I have a book written by him.

Snow Crash

I named my firstborn son after that book :P
*finger snap of recognition*
That's the book! I knew the name sounded familiar!

So what's the kid's name? Snow? Crash? Hiro? Um...YT?

Hiro

We were talking about names with my dad and he jokingly remarked "You could just name him Hiro Protagonist."  My eyes lit up...

Coincidentally, I was also studying nihongo at the time.

And no... it's just Hiro... I didn't make his middle name Protagonist or anything :P   Two years after he was born, Heroes came out with the popular character Hiro Nakamura.  Now everyone we meet thinks that was the inspiration for his name until we correct them, even though he pre-dates the show.

Die by the sword was a non-click base sword fighting simulator. Though it was far from perfect. You positioned the sword by moving your mouse. a horizontal strike was achieved by moving the mouse left and right, a vertical strike was achieved by moving the mouse up and then down.

Though it sounds like he wants a lot more precision than that.

I will also point out that Hiro Protagonist (yes, that was the name of the Hero Protagonist) wrote just such a program in Niel Stephenson book snow crash.

I've been awaiting a successor to Die by the Sword for sooooo long.  I got to play the demo of that game a few times and was enamoured with it.  Not just the sword movement, but the locational damage/dismemberment system was really amazing for its time also.  Too bad I didn't have the hardware to handle it until the game was already 4 or 5 years old.

Very few people had the hardware for that game at the time, it was one of the first games with a 3d physics engine. The only other game build on the same engine was the ill fated and horribly buggy Jurassic Park game.

Neil Stephenson has co-founded a game studio, and put up a Kickstarter for an advanced swordfighting simulation called CLANG
Holy, they need $460,000 by about the end of June in order to make this project work T.T  I uh, don't exactly want to tell everyone to donate since this would technically compete with donations to DF...  But uh.  This project sounds like it's on more levels of innovation than most games these days.

I got a mod position on some forums recently. I guess that's pretty nice. Also I got some time to come around Bay12 once again and see what's going on.

I ran a mile in 7 minutes, took an ice cold shower, and drank water.

And I thought of a cool name.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
