Ah the alligator snapping turtle we meet again. I remember one in a zoo that was 400 years old and the damn thing was big enough to be eatin salmon.

Just Salmon? We had a pretty big one in a pond near us. We convinced a friend of ours it was a rock, and he almost jumped out of the boat on to it before we pulled him back. Haha, good times. It was particularly keen on being tossed bacon, I believe - but then, what turtle isn't?

One of my uncle's neighbors in Arkansas had one living in his pond. He also had a lot of one-legged (or even no-legged) ducks. Damn thing surfaced while we there visiting, and the guy whipped out a .22 pistol and shot it at about 20 yards. The bullet ricocheted off the shell. Turtle didn't even blink.

Whilst not a turtle, he is pretty hardcore and has wounded many a dog and cat that got too nosey. Wouldnt float too well though.

Forget bullet-proof vests made of spider silk. We just need turtle shell vests.

Yeah, it wasn't a snapping turtle, though we do have 'em around here. Wasn't really small, but not terribly large, either... maybe, hrm. Two by two of dollar bills? Around that size. A bit smaller than my shoe, length wise, I think. Bigger than hand, smaller than skull. Generic turtle.

I'm not quite redneck enough to go about nudging snapping turtles with my shoe.
