Speaking of fast-forward buttons, I'd like to shake the hand of whoever pioneered emulator and ROM development. Shady though the practice may be, it's the only real way to get a lot of classics that either are highly expensive and rare or simply don't work anymore. Heck, I recently discovered that the battery in my cartridge of Pokemon Ruby had died, cutting me off from time-specific events and mons forever. In older games, a dead battery meant no saves, ever. Someday soon, emulators will be the only way to play the classics.

I could never, ever play the pokemon games without fast-forward. Seriously, toggled between 3x and 5x depending on the situation.

If I had to play at normal speed, I would end up throwing the gameboy out of frustration.

Repeat this with pretty much any rpg with attack animations that were unskippable.

The 'fastest' setting for text for Pokemon was always a tad slow.

Yeah... fast forward coupled with an RPG you can rapid-fire your way through the battles (I.e. The confirm button doesn't open a menu in the field)? Grinding can suddenly bite your ass, because you finished like three hours ago and are now halfway through the game.

It makes certain games suddenly enjoyable, without the taint of outright cheating

I got to the wall monster and couldn't beat the it because I hadn't spent enough time grinding. I didn't have enough experience or items, and I was stuck because there was no way to get back to town and rest up. I ran out of MP, so I could only heal by leveling.

Sucks, too. I might have actually finished it if the game hadn't gotten me stuck like that.

On the upside: I may have spent more time reading! So, it's happy, right?

Ah, EVO: Search for Eden. Some of the worst controls, collision detection, and level up systems to ever "grace" the Super Nintendo, but it remained strangely compelling. Probably due to the batshit crazy story.

And the most atrocious level of necessary grinding to ever besmirch gaming as a whole. I have no idea whatever compelled me to finish it all the way through.

...well, it was still better than Spore.
