In My Japanese Coach, it's 'trying' to teach me hiragana, but I've never failed at anything so hard. Doing the game where I trace the characters, I'm fine, but in the game where I have to write them out from memory, I'm just staring at the screen blank and helpless. I can't remember any of these characters, it just seems so non-intuitive, I can't grasp how anyone gets this.

But I'm doing well in every other portion so that makes me happy. :P

How many are you trying to memorize at a time? I've never used My Japanese Coach, but I find they're easiest to learn in sets of four or five. If they're trying to get you to remember a lot, you might try doing some extra-curricular.

No using. That's not what freedom is for.

I was able to learn them all in sets of five (grouped by the consonant part), over the course of a year in a highschool Japanese class. So, focus on small sets, do what you did to learn the letters in Kindergarten and write them out a bunch while looking at the letter before moving on to writing them by memory, and expect it to take a while.

Well, I tied off one Hell of a weekend, having no Internet.

Deep in the "rough" part of downtown Dallas, I saw a crazy drugtrip mural that included Jake and the Ice King, but no Finn.  Then I went to see the Three Stooges (highly recommended), and one of the preview commercials was for Adventure Time, played entirely by live actors in costume.

Also, Three Stooges, yeah.  I didn't think you could do hammy telegraphed vaudeville in the 21st century, but by God, they did it.

I don't remember much about my kindergarten days, but I remember that I only started to learn how to read in second grade, when I had to personally get tutored with some Hooked On Phonics. The moment I learned how intuitive it was though, I remember jumping from elementary to Highschool to college level reading in just the span of a year or two.

Also, the game is introducing them in sets of about ten at a time. It's alot to take in when each phoneme has it's own special loopdy-loop character.

>go North

You walk up to Ryan North who is inexplicably standing in the room.
He asks "Who are you? Where am I?"
You explain the situation to him ask him about his relationship with Andrew Hussie.
"Oh no. You're one of THEM aren't you? Leave me alone! STAY OUT OF MY LIFE!"
Before you can reply he runs out of the room.

Well that was weird. You make sure to remember to write "north" with no capital letters next time.
So tempted to do this.

I've progressed from Toddler to Pre-schooler in my little Japanese Teaching game. I started out as Baby, then Toddler, and now I'm at the next highest level. I can't wait to actually become an elementary student. That's probably a ways out there though.

Also, seeing all the little symbols get used in words is helping alot than just trying to brute force remember them individually.
