What I don't understand about Windows 8: Do we really need another one?

Fuck no we don't. Microsoft just wants to prove how badly you can combine tablets and desktops OSes while messing with Explorer and Task Manager for no apparent reason. And also force people to use their tabletised start menu screen to get to the actual sodding desktop.

I saw an updated version of Yes, Prime Minister in play form today.  I won't talk about it too much since I'm pretty sure only Starver would actually know about it but it was really good.

One interesting thing though is that they introduced a new Special Advisor character to represent the Prime Minister gaining some level of control over his public servants.  Apparently this shift came partly from ministers watching the original Yes, Prime Minister and being determined not to be controlled and manipulated like Jim Hacker.  So ultimately the show arguably ended up influencing reality to the point where it had to change.

Theres plenty of things not interesting or just crap about Win8 so far, just having a nice boot time isn't going to sway too many people. And people still know what I'm talking about if I mention Vista, so I'm not sure if bringing out a version that changes even more is actually going to help.

Running the same OS and having the same API as tablets is a major boon to developers at least.  Tablet and smartphone users are an increasingly large part of all computer users.  A surprising amount of people use their tablets or phones /way/ more than they use their PC.  A consistent experience has its advantages.

 Normally I would say the only reason to make a new OS version is to take advantage of new technology. Only thing I can really say has advanced recently is now prevalent portable devices are. It's not a terribly new technology that helps PC users directly, but it is a new market that needs to be explored.

 Being a first-time thing it'll be awkward. Lessons will be learned, and Windows 9 will be bitchin on portable tech.
