So yeah, Fire Emblem 11. I actually put the game down for a few days because it felt like I was playing through the earlier games again, and I picked it back up again and boy was I HAPPY that I did, because I've finally gotten to see the largest changes in the series I've ever seen.
One big change is that now you can 'forge' weapons and give them unique stats. It gets obscenely expensive very quickly, but now I can purchase god tier weapons, I don't care how expensive it gets! I made the mistake though, in that I didn't realize that I could only forge once per chapter and so I used up my first forge on an improved sword for my thief that could have been way beefier than I made it. Way to be informative game, but I still love ya.
Even better, you can even give a unique name to your custom weapon, so it stands out from all the tripe that winds up cluttering your inventories. I just love that so much.
EDIT: However, the system is flawed in that you can give NEGATIVE stats your weapons, but it costs the same as giving them positive stats. What's up with that?
Even more bizarrely though, I found that you can change ANY characters class to any one of four or five different ones, free of charge, as many times as you want so long as it doesn't exceed a built-in unit limit placed on you for a certain type of class. This allows party and character flexibility like never seen before! Really hyped about it, though I don't like how it trivializes each character's class, since the classes themselves are part of each character's identity, I think, and I don't like it being treated like another generic stat to be flipped and switched around to the player's whim.
Though, I'll use it while it's available of course
One thing I don't like though is that the arena's are far far far less abusable than in previous installments, and to let you know, these are the ugly and disgusting random enemy arenas that have been prevalent ever since five and on. They've been ostensibly altered from what I can tell, in that the AI is much much much more determined to pit your characters against bad matchups so you're forced to concede before your character dies. Even worse is that, and while I can't prove it with my small sampling, is that it seems that the AI remembers how many times a certain character has won in the arena, and will be much more likely to put them in bad matchups if they win alot, thus forcing them out of the arena.
EVEN WORSE is that the emulator I'm using flips the fuck out when I try to use savestates with this game, and will crash the game and delete my suspended save if I do try to use them at all. Meaning I have to play legitimately and fairly with the arena, which is just not an option with the fact that they're tremendous fucking bastards.
Fortunately, it's possible to make legitimate hardsaves when playing the chapter midway through special points on the map, although they can only be used once, and that's a very helpful feature!
One thing I do like though, is that although the algorithms have been altered so now even pathetic enemies have a chance to hit, your characters are much tougher now and can now take more than two or three hits! They're not made out of glass now! This causes a great deal less paranoia when playing. Plus, there's several convenient time saving features in that you can see every enemy's attack zone, and even only a few selected enemies if you desire! Takes alot of the physical work out of strategizing, and I appreciate that.
I'm liking how this is shaping up so far.
