If you think that's mad, wait until you see the DF/Homestuck/MLP/Touhou fandom.

I like all these things, but I don't think I count as a fan.

Sid Meier's Covert Action, one of the best PC games of 1990.  Check it out, it's a really good action-puzzle game.  The controls take some getting used to though.

4 hours of coding and my dice roller can now tell me relevant statistics to getting matching dice on arbitrary rolls. I need to add code for when the player can't choose dice freely and must simply take the highest 3, but that should be (relatively) simple. Still, having accomplished this (and the requisite math to sanity check the results), I feel pretty awesome. This seriously doubled the length of the program. Which suggests there may have been a more elegant way of doing it. Don't care.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

How far humanity has come in the past few thousand years.

Now even the worst parts of the world (eg. war-torn parts of africa) are better in almost every regard (eg. slavery is officially illegal pretty much everywhere, punishments are far more humane, life expectancy is longer, greater social mobility (compared to feudalistic society)) then the best parts of the world were thousands of years ago.
