So, we had our midterm in Java today. As soon as the instructor said the word "Midterm", I suddenly felt like the least competent programmer in the room. Turns out, not only was I the 3rd one done (prof wouldn't take midterms with errors in them, including spacing errors,) but there were people working on it when the time for the midterm ran out. We had 90 minutes to complete a relatively simple set of tasks. I did it in 20. ^_^

I have to admit, though: The thought of there being worse programmers than myself is...disturbing.

I have a java class this semester too.  Taz linked me to a cool software called RoboCode that lets you code tanks in java to destroy each other.

I'm sure you aren't that bad... What was the test anyway?

Programming does take a certain skill. Linguistics.

If you don't have linguistic skill you likely won't be a good programmer.

It was a very basic set of instructions, that was basically an if-else, some very basic math (addition and subtraction), String input and output, and a switch. Really, nothing too terribly complex.

Now if I remember any of my high school programming, all of those are absurdly easy to program in most any language...

In VB i used to make a simple switch by having a variable that would only ever take one or two values and if the variable was 1, do this, if it was 0, do something else.

I know that I could also use SelectCase n but i preferred my way because it sat better in my head and needed less typing. (I'd learned it from the pseudocode/code snippet entry of RPG Maker 2000/03.

Addition and subtraction... every language can do that to my knowledge.
Variable, + number; variable + other variable... D:
String input and output? I don't remember that... is that message entry and display? VB was very easy to put that in.

And as for If/elses, they're just easy. If this, then that. If not, then the other. I failed to understand how back in highschool some of the other students couldn't wrap their head around it.

Yeah, but back in my day, we didn't get programming in high school. The only computer class that was offered was CCNA networking. We all coasted through that class because Y2k was supposed to render it obsolete! :P

I got to level 20 in the Tetris game I'm playing. Insane.

I'm taking a class in Visual Basic next year. After learning C++ myself, I hope it will be interesting. Programming is fun.

Why do I want a hardcore rock/metal/whatever-sounds-awesome song with the theme of "Tonight We Ride"? In the vein of the Leader-Gives-Pre-Battle-Speech a la Braveheart, or Lord of the Rings.

Wait, no. That's not the question. Rather, why has this not been made yet?
