I want to learn Aikido.  Ninjutsu would be pretty damn awesome as well.

I took some Aikido, but it was something I couldn't really keep up because of my middle brother. He can be a little bit difficult to deal with, especially when it comes to things that are violent.

I'm kind of a pacifist, but he really enjoys the prospect of kicking the crap out of someone. He was also a bit egotistical, and believed he had knew better and felt the need to instruct me, even when he very much didn't. He also tended to be very forceful when practicing, and didn't really seem to understand that part of the philosophy of Aikido is that the better your technique is, the less strength you need.

Maybe if I get my own income some day I'll take it up again. I'm kind of interested in learning how to defend myself without (significantly) harming the other person.


I'd also like to learn fencing, because I've always wanted to be a snobbish genteel persona.

I learned today that when my dad was a student at UVA in the '80s, the library was open 24/7 but it wasn't fully staffed- which meant that large portions of the library didn't have the surveillance they were supposed to. As a result, there was this weirdo, who was never caught, who would go around in the wee small hours and find girls who had fallen asleep at their desks studying, and cut off their ponytails. Presumably, he kept the ponytails for less-than-wholesome purposes. It sounds like the sort of thing I would do, although I wouldn't, since both ponytails and their owners are cuter when not separated. It would make a funny mystery story, tho...girls keep losing their ponytails and the detective has to figure out who's cutting the ponytails off...

And that's why my search history includes the phrase "university of virginia mystery ponytail fetishist".

Konan knew what those words meant; her friend was in for twenty rounds of the dreaded "dodge" training. He stared at that ogre their teacher became when he was truly enraged, and Yahiko's heart sank like the Titanic. What had he done to deserve such a fate? His mind raced frantically; he thought of every last possibility until it hit him like a cinderblock to the face. Jiraiya-sensei knew about the outhouse…Yahiko had to explain himself; it was the only way he would live to see the next day.

"Sensei, you know how much I hate that monster you built. Everyone at this table knows how bad it smelled, how the stench could be smelt even in here. Please, you must understand. Cutting out indoor plumbing really has hurt us, and we've endured it for years now. I complained and complained, but that never seemed to do any good. Yeah, I'll admit it; I knocked that damn outhouse into the lake, but please understand sensei that I was at the breaking point!"

Jiraiya-sensei was incredibly quiet for a minute or two, and Konan noticed Yahiko's eyes felt as if he had proved his point to him. Sadly, he uttered those dreaded words once more in such an acidic voice that she was briefly reminded of that Orochimaru creep who had so casually suggested that Jiraiya-sensei kill the orphans upon their first meeting. "Yahiko, outside, after dinner."

Yahiko's mind raced for something that would help his case. There had to be something to at least lighten his inevitable punishment. Their sensei was usually a very understanding man, and he was normally thrilled when they admitted the truth. Wait, the truth! That was his way out of being target practice!

"Jiraiya-sensei, remember the story you told me about Tsunade-hime? She cut down her grandfather's prized cherry tree just for target practice, and when she confessed her crimes, the Shodai didn't punish her whatsoever. Surely telling the truth must count for something?" Yahiko pleaded with a nervous smile.

Jiraiya-sensei remained very silent for another five minutes. Slowly, the two of them were getting the feeling that Yahiko was free. Finally, after five minutes of utter silence, they were simply confident that his plea about doing the right thing had changed Jiraiya's mind. Yahiko relaxed and was about ready to leave the dinner table for a well-deserved night of sleep when Konan cringed and Jiraiya-sensei said all that needed to be said on the subject.

No, no, no, see, the ponytail guy leaves them chocolate with a couple of random initials carved into it, and the red herring is this dirty old professor who's above suspicion because he's tenured, but it turns out to be the senior detective behind the disappearing ponytails, who's above suspicion because he's the detective.
