I also found another song from that game redone in Genesis style. it works... really well.

This game and GENESIS?

I never played any of those games.

Any time I wanted to buy one they were sold out (or plain not on sale) D:

I'ma pipe up.

My first one was an SNES. I had Pinocchio, Toy Story, Donkey Kong Country, Pac-Attack and The Jungle Book.

God, games were difficult back then. I tried playing Toy Story now, and the jumps that are required are bloody difficult.

Then, i had no console until 2006 when my uncle gave me his old PSX. That's still trodding along, accompanied by its younger brother the new PS3.

You think games were hard back then? First I owned was a NES... Do you even know what finishing the Legend of Zelda meant to me? Here is a clue, this was before I had the internet to tell me where I had to go next.

I think Talespin was the first game I ever managed to finish... Stupid submarine.

No one I knew had an NES. I was one of two in the neighbourhood with an SNES. There were a few kids with Master Systems, and one kid who still had his dad's Atari 5200.

Never had an Atari... From what I can gather I wasn't missing that much. Seriously, apart from that game with the spinning egg, what did the Atari do? Pretty happy that I had a NES, still have it somewhere, still working. Good condition too!

Zelda II: The adventure of link remains one of my favourite, and hardest games that I ever finished to this day.

The first game I ever played was E.T. on the 2600. :'(

Also, Java class got cut short today because of an impending snowstorm. No homework. Yay, no homework!

Not as hard as Megaman... I never got far in that game. It is just mind breaking. If anybody ever finished that game, they were more patient than I ever was.

Games were hardcore back in the day! I think it stems from the fact that programmers made a lot more of the design choices, rather than some business man trying for universal appeal to boost sales or developer trying to be the next hot thing. No, they were making a game with their own two hands byte by byte, and they were going to make the people playing the game suffer for it just as much as they did, and it was wonderful.

That reminds me of watching Sequelitis with Egoraptor. He points out every single design choice between Megaman and Megaman X, and how it was the programmers doing it and not some douche going "MEGAMAN MEGAMAN PRESS B TO JUMP"

This provided gamers with longer playtime, and thus more entertainment out of their purchase. In those days, companies were selling a new (and pretty expensive) product, and they needed to convince the market that Games were worth their investment.

Today, with an established Game Industry and new tech opening up new possibilities, the focus has shifted to one of mass appeal, and selling as little game with the shortest development time as you can, for as much money as people are willing to pay. The Downloadable Content business model (which I don't understand how people can buy into) has only exacerbated this.

With a bigger industry focusing on the brevity and quantity of their games, and a broader base of clients, games have become more formulaic, focusing more on experiencing the sights and sounds it has to offer, or letting buyers create their own gameplay (via online multiplayer or extensive moddability)... which unfortunately means elegant self-teaching game design, long-lasting content, and/or true innovation is playing second fiddle.

It was also because in those days, essentially all veteran game designers and design leads had cut their teeth on producing arcade games, which were supposed to be hard as shit so you'd keep putting quarters in them.  And design habits die hard, especially when they're still relatively helpful.

So what you are saying is that all that DLC crap is just a waste of resources, instead we should be making games hard as megaman was and make them pay per play.

I grew up without a console of my own; any console games I played were played while visiting a friend. It was the N64 era, so we played Super Smash Bros., Pokemon Stadium, Mario Kart (which I sucked at more than anything, since I forever suck at racing games), and I think we played Mario Party at least once. I think we played GoldenEye at one point, but the only clear memory I have of playing that game was one time at the house of a girl from my class who I now recall had at least once drawn a chibi version of Edgar Allen Poe. I can recall playing Lego Racers at one time (or, at least, building a car for it). I've played little bits of Pokemon Snap, Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Starfox, and, think, a little bit of Ocarina of Time. I've watched friends play all the games I mentioned, plus Rayman and some Star Wars game where the main character has a jetpack, I think, and seemed to activate controls by tapping them with his gun.
