So my first day on the job was probably the oddest I've ever had.
10am - 11am: Fill out paper work, as per most normal jobs.
11am - 12pm: Try to get an answer about what I should be doing. Someone eventually points me to the company Wiki page, and I start reading the (customer) wiki pages on their software.
12pm - 1pm: Set up about 5 different programs, from chat servers to Tortoise SVN to MySQL to VNC to....some other stuff. I have about 5 sticky notes worth pw and login information now, for everything from the company wiki to our time clock software to our chat network....to a company-wide account where we pay into it for lunch and beer.
Oh yeah, the Keggarator. I heard more about the Keggarator than my actual job today. I even got to sample some of its bounty...on the clock.
1pm - 2pm: Sit in on a conference call with a client who is getting integrated with our software. Proceed to contribute nothing except a doodle on my legal pad, and am amused a bug was exposed during the whole process. I don't feel bad. The VP didn't write anything pertinent down either.
2pm - 3:30pm: Table tennis. Not ping pong, because ping pong is for kids. These guys play freaking table tennis, and I'm ashamed to say my thighs are sore. I'm also ashamed to say that I didn't know dick about tournament rules and serve like a putz.
3:30pm - 5pm: Sit in the office talking with the other tech support guys. More wiki reading. Some recreational web browsing. Listening to the other TS guy handle calls.
I'm still not sure exactly what I'm supposed to be doing right now, and I doubt I'll be more sure tomorrow. This is definitely one of the coolest jobs I think I've ever had....but I think it's also one of the most unnerving. I'm used to structure, training, having people eyeball my every working moment. I'm kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop.
