Another notable birthday (it was on the 25th, but near enough).

On 30 October 1999, while Mugabe was visiting London, two men jumped in front of his car. A third stood behind, so the driver could not reverse away. A thin, neatly dressed Australian opened the passenger door. He held up his left hand, palm forward, to show that he was not carrying a gun. He laid his right hand on the tyrant's shoulder and said: "Robert Mugabe, you are under arrest on charges of torture. I am now summoning the police." Mugabe's eyes popped, his jaw dropped and the blood drained from his face.

The police came, sure enough. But they showed their pinched priorities by arresting Peter Tatchell and his fellow gay activists. The moment is worth savouring, nevertheless. For a few seconds, Tatchell had succeeded in giving Mugabe a taste of how a just world would treat him.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Reading Notre-Dame de Paris. Got as far as Frollo's big speech to la Esmerelda. I'm really impressed by the depth these characters have. Suddenly the way Frollo behaved. The way he was surprised when Esmerelda rebuffed him, suddenly makes sense.

Did you remember to warm the kitten first, or were you just relying on atmospheric friction?

A client called us talking about a computer we worked on previously.  It was nothing special the client was leaving a company and wanted us to move her personal files to another computer and remove them from the company computer so it could be returned fresh.  We copied her files and returned the computer to bare drive+operating system status.

Today we get a call from her saying that according to the company we had destroyed the computer by reinstalling the operating system and that they would have to buy a new one to replace it and wanted to charge her for it as well as the volume licenses for the Microsoft office suite.  What actually seems to have happened is that they either lost the keys or pirated all their office software and wanted a scapegoat, saying that she had 'stolen' all the company software.

After hearing the company's description of the system when they got it back I informed her that we returned it to factory settings and that the computer was fully functional, and that most companies we work with prefer returned systems in that state so that the software is easily reinstalled and reconfigured for a new user.   I informed my boss about it and he wrote one hell of a email both criticizing the company's IT department for pretty much not doing their jobs and not keeping track of their software licenses, removed all the blame from her, and offered our services as a managed services provider to them.  She forwarded it to her company.  It was glorious.

I had almost forgotten why I loved working with this guy.

Kittens have plenty of body heat to provide warm.

I dunno about yours but my kitten is cold and uncaring. He needs to be warmed up first before tossing.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
