FFXII is...not so great. I didn't see why some people thought it was shocking bad.
Because battles are essentially just watching your characters fight? It's a shame, the story was interesting(even if the main character is completely irrelevant to everything) but I couldn't finish it because fighting was so horrendously boring.

I finished it.  I didn't mind the fighting so much, but the plot was just so comparatively full of suck that I wanted to EAT PEOPLE.

For reference, I like FFVI through FFIX (I'd probably like X, but I've never played it).  I'm rather tolerant of a lot of stuff in games, but I draw the line at XII's shenanigans.

HOLY SHIT.  They've officially closed the Poincare conjecture!

I'm sure you know, you can turn off gambits if you want to control your characters every move, so I won't mention that...(except I just did)

I quit because both the battles and plot were enough like every other FF that they barely held my interest, I liked at best a quarter of the characters, and lots of the sidequests felt more like padding, Hunts and the like.

I may pick it up again, but not with the stack of to-play games I've got at the moment. That said, it wasn't unplayably bad or anything.

Even...8? That's ju- augh - sorry, I just threw up a little.

I never got why some people feel the need to criticize other people's tastes in games. But it seems like something that can easily cause an argument to break out so... Yeah.

Now, now, I'm not saying Vector has bad taste in games for liking FF8. I just respectfully disagree. Sort of like how FF8 disagrees with my stomach, but with more respect.

Eh, it's not that it's a really good game, and I certainly understand why people hate it so much.  There was just certain things about it that caught my attention.  The best out of the four I mentioned is probably VI, while the one which was most fun was IX--but for unknown reasons, I just like VIII the most.

But is not the most fun the best? The point of games is to let people have fun, after all...

Nope.  I don't optimize for fun.  I know that's a weird thing to say, but it's how I think... I guess I'm a very serious person at heart, no matter how silly I like acting.

I, too, was a fan of 8.
6 is definitely my favourite though.

8 was pretty good, though the story was a bit too sappy for my tastes. My main problem was that after junctioning 100 ultimas to Squall's strength it was far too easy. I also didn't like how it pretty much encourages to not use your magic at all and just bash things to death, but that was a relatively minor concern.

I also played triple triad far more than I played the actual game.

That's sorta how I felt playing FFX-2. Sphere Break took my attention more than the rest of the game, as well as Blitzball for FFX. They were more fun than the rest of the games. Just as well, FFXII and going moster hunting felt more important than progressing the story. Sorta a challenge to keep each one challenging without being too overly difficult. I have yet to reach Hell Wyrm or Yiazmat (AKA- The longest friggin' boss battles you've ever encountered. Gambits are necessary. I recall correctly, speed runs against these guys reach about 45-75 minutes.).

True, perhaps, but I felt that large amounts of the characterization portrayed the monumental suck of adolescence in a surprisingly accurate fashion.  So yeah, the overall story wasn't as good as in other FFs, and most of the supporting characters were rather shallow, and it didn't have that silly bonkers fun of FFIX or VI or, hell, even VII... but something about it was compelling.
