Personally, I hated both Kingdom Hearts and FFXII.  The only good thing about the latter was Balthier, and occasionally Penelo and Fran depending on how gay I'm feeling.

Balthier was a pretty good guy, although I really wonder what was vaan's reason for being dragged along. With 10 and 12, I really have to wonder if there's a trend of main characters tangentially related to the story going on. It does happen in Final Fantasy Tactics A2 too. Although, I do have to say, vaan does get better clothing design at least. Makes me wish I had his vest... and could find my white shirt.

Oh speaking of, been playing final fantasy tactics A2 again. I like the mechanics overhaul, plus there's still space for making fairly broken characters. It'll come in handy later on near the end, once my summoner basically has no cost at all to cast spells left and right on large areas at once, while managing to heal all debuffs on my side and inflict them, with damage on the other. I think I just may have broken the game a bit too much.

Vaan was there because Square-Enix's last game with a more mature male lead flopped, and they assumed that that was the reason why (instead of it being not called Final Fantasy). The happiest moment for me was when I realized the story no longer gave a shit about him once Ashe joined the party permanently, and the worst moments where whenever he started talking again.

I do admit that the only party member I ever liked was Balthier (Ashe and Basch I found to be acceptable, though, and these three were my party all the time every time, to the detriment of everyone else's levels), but the antagonists were just great and I loved the setting when I wasn't walking through a forest for the thousandth time searching for one goddamn piece of loot.

Methinks the difficult-to-place difference is that after 6, the games got a whole lot more abstract in their stories. The closest FF6 ever came to that was Cyan's dream, which was a minor sidequest - in later games, the characters' internal struggles made external became a lot more central, or at least this is my impression.

I've got a soft spot for Kingdom Hearts, but only because it's tinged with so much goddamn nostalgia for me. I played through it at a time in my life where everything seemed to be going amazingly, almost immediately before teenage angst kicked in, and when I thought Ansem was actually pretty cool. I did not have good taste, obviously, but as a result there is much fondness for it.

We're now playing "slay the dragon" after we picked up a box of secondhand "boy" toys, such as knights, monsters, swords, axes,  dragons, actionfigures etc. The princess has an active role in this dragonslaying, and I get to practice before Skyrim comes out.

Although she liked it better when she was able to convert the dragon to her cause, and the princesses' pet dragon burninated the evil flying sharks.

I actually really liked Kingdom Hearts 1. I played 2, and thought it was average to terrible depending, and never bothered with any further sequels.
