My cat just came running home with a bird in her mouth. After chasing her around the house for a few minutes, she ran outside again and dropped the bird (you know, to play with it some more). It promptly flew away from her and escaped into one of hour trees. I hope it survives.

Also, listening to old music and finding that some stuff is still awesomly awesome.

You own a cat but are squicked by the cat's natural diet? you should probably rethink the pets you chose.

Also, are you a vegetarian? if not, you're really no better than the cat.

just because an animal's small and cute doesn't make it less tasty.

...Why do you think I'm squicked by it? And what's with the attitude? You sound like I attacked you or something.

You chose to keep the cat, but your sympathy is with the bird.

Relevant. Only the first few seconds, you can probably not watch the rest of it. This post is fair use, I think.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

And? Are you saying I can't keep a cat because I also care for the animals she hunts? It's not like I care less about her because of it.

Look, I've had cats all my life. I know what they do, and I know why they do it. It's nothing new to me. I like cats despite the hunting and the playing, like most cat people who don't keep their cats inhouse. It doesn't somehow make me unable to empathise with her prey, and I don't understand why you think it would make me a bad cat owner.

Both! Also dogs if available.

I had the same recurring nightmare I always have, about running and running and it getting harder as I'm pressed into the floor, but this time it ended differently.  I just kept going, and when I almost fell down I dug my fingers into the ground and kept going, and then I could finally stand up again and I was still running.

This is frankly a surprisingly good sign from my psyche.
