So, I checked out that apartment. They want me to sign something Thursday, which seems fast but I guess it's good since every trip devours 30 of my precious dollars.

Pros:
Incredibly close to work, I could walk in 10 to 15 minutes if I needed to
Affordable - utilities and parking factored in, I'd be looking at a bit over 500 bucks a month
Quiet roommate
Roommate is also Chinese, if I can accurately determine which language things in the apartment were written in. Planning to learn Mandarin anyway (I expect this goal to fizzle in a fit of frustration, but shoot for the moon, right?), and exposure to new cultures is always fun.

Cons:
Lousy Internet, not sure if this can be fixed by paying for a new plan myself but I'll find out Thursday I guess.
No bedroom furniture; I have none, so I'll need to buy an air mattress, plus a folding desk and cheap office chair if I want to get anything done ever. At least until I have money for real furniture.
Attractive roommate - gonna get awkward eventually, but this at least I should be able to handle.

I guess this goes here since it means I definitely have a fallback plan, but I'm gonna try and get something better before Thursday. Pester a guy I was talking to last week to see if he has made up his mind yet, and see if there's anything I can schedule to look at before I sign anything on Thursday.

Definitely mixed feelings here, if you couldn't tell somehow.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Shouldn't the "Attractive Roomate" go under Pros? That'd be a whole lot better than having an ugly roomate.

Attractive roommates lead to issues. Personal experience.

Long story. Not my roommate though.

Yeah, I don't even have personal experience and I'm aware of the potential for issues. I just gotta enforce my own maturity settings more strictly, but it's annoying. I develop crushes way too easily, too, so that complicates things.

Maybe it's just me, but I always liked those issues. Either that, or I was a lot more casual about...uh...relationships than you guys are.

I'm Catholic and grew up with overprotective parents, so that's a pretty good bet. They wouldn't even let me take the train alone until I was nineteen.

Wow. The day I turned 13, my dad told me not to get thrown in jail for anything, because he couldn't afford to bail me out.

There's always that particular level of overprotective that changes sheltered children into rampant sex fiends, though.

Didn't happen to me, although god knows my parents worried.

And my parents and I went something like this:

Parents: You snuck out again. And you have a black eye. You were out fighting again.
MZ: Yes. Yes. And yes.
Parents: Did you at least make the other guy bleed?
MZ: Yes.
Parents: Who was there?
MZ: The police. That's why I left.
Mother: I meant which friend of yours?
Father: Were there girls there?
MZ: None, and yes.
Mother: Who were you with?
Father: Why were you fighting when there was girls? Did you make any money, at least?

My Da told me at 13 that if I got a girl pregnant before I got married I'd be "fucking disowned and kicked out, then promptly murdered". Then I ended up messing around at 14. That was a bad move.

I've never had a roommate of the opposite sex that wasn't my girlfriend because I knew we'd end up having a relationship of some sort.

So Scaraban might have a point.

My counterpoint was that if you're smart about it, you can have a casual relationship and it's no big deal, even if you want to move on. It's easy if you're "just friends". I know some people don't operate like that, but I can only offer my point of view.

Kids are dumb at 14. I was dumb at 14. Hell, I'm a wise enough guy to realise that I'm still young and stupid as all hell, even though I feel old and living an anachronistic existence.

Besides, I don't do anything casually. :P 110%, everything. For me, life's much more interesting when you throw yourself into it.
