Never having borrowed money before means you can't be trusted to ever borrow any in the future.  You might even steal money, because you're too poor to borrow money if you've never borrowed before.  I guess.
Well, would you trust someone who had access to all this FREE MONEY but didn't go on a Rocko style spending spree, instead choosing to perversely only buy things they could afford? Obviously such a person would be a criminal.

Banks and insurance make it an industry policy to assume you're a deadbeat, and punish you preemptively for it, with the onus on you to not just hold up your end of the bargain, but your end of a harder bargain just because you're new.  That's a very nice and agreeable policy that doesn't insult my intelligence or sense of self-worth at all.

Also, you win a cookie for that reference.  If I ever get a credit card, first thing I'm buying is a painting of a crying clown in an iron lung.

EDIT: Yep, the Internet has them for sale.

Expect the worst and all your surprises will be happy. Or in this case profits.

Well, as they have no means of judging your trustworthiness, it would not be entirely unreasonable to be wary.

Cracked articles on history provide all sorts of screensaver/desktop material. I now have more images of guys in plate armour than I will ever need.

My dad got me a book. Across the Nightingale Floor, by Lian Hearn. Set in a pseudo-Japan, basically a low fantasy. Pretty good so far.

but bank responsibility is covered in Being an Adult 101), blah blah blah.
For me, it was covered way earlier than Adult 101(by the way, excellent name for a porno, just saying), although I'm one of the few who actually paid attention in class.

Yes, in the US, good credit is everything.

Renting apartments, applying for mortgage, cellphone, car leases and buying, loans, etc.

Use credit instead of debit - get a credit card early. Learn to control yourself. Pay it off every week online and you'll never have to worry about interest.

Debit cards are drawn instantly from your bank account, when you get identity stolen or scammed, your account gets overdrawn and usually the money is untraceable and you'll have to pay all the fees. With credit cards, you can call your credit card company and they will work with the bank and usually stop a fraudulent payment from having to be made to you.

If you can't control yourself, use it for necessities like gas and food and pay it off every week. Do this for a few years and you will be able to go nuts and apply for anything you want later and get it. This includes credit cards with awesome bonuses and great deals on rentals/mortgages.

EDIT: And put your money in a credit union instead of a bank if you're thrifty, and for Buddha's sake invest in some CDs and Money Market investments.

But what about the  kinda tautological things that have happened in the WTF thread? specifically:
My application for a credit card was denied because I don't currently have a credit card or any other outstanding credit.  Which is why I filled out the application in the first place.

Apply for a shittier credit card from a different company.

Credit card companies will always take in new blood, just got to find the right bank or institution.

No, I was agreeing with you.  If you don't already have a credit score, you can only get shitty, punishing credit accounts.  You can only qualify for fair credit stuff by already having good credit.

Yeah, well, you start with the shitty card with no benefits and work your way up. I started out with a $500 limit card and some shit interest that I don't even remember because I always paid it off every month.

Now my current card is over 10 times that limit and I don't even want it to be higher. I went to check out cellphone plans and the guy at the counter joked that I could take out 10 iphones.

Get a crap one, pay it off every week. Profit in a few years. That's why you need to start early.

It's a rather nice thing to begin maintaining early in our society, like exercise/health and constant self-education.

I really should just bookmark this so I stop having to go through 200 strips to find it. I post it often enough.
