Just went shopping. I'm going to look, how do the kids say it, mad fly baller out the heezy?

What ever kid says that should be beaten until they are no longer able to eat solid food.

This thread inspired me.
For some reason every time somebody talks about avatars, I feel like getting a new one.
I am cursed to only have varying levels of Patchouli.

I'd still give it a play yourself when you get the chance. Now that I feel I've outgrown the series MGS3 is still one I'd go back to for fun. There's just something about the progression, the weapons, the environments and the bosses that makes it fun enough that I'm fine with turning my brain off and ignoring the story.

Yeah, I really want to play it myself.  Somehow, I've managed to really enjoy the Metal Gear series' gameplay a lot, even though I'm usually more into games for the story than anything else.

I'm not sure how it will age as I spend more time away from it, but it's one of those things where I feel like the purported "plot" is just a sort of framework a bunch of ideas are hung on, and I'm happy enough enjoying those ideas without needing to have some sort of coherent storyline.

So, eh... more power to Kojima, I guess.  Shine on, you crazy diamond... ?

I will give him credit for keeping things mostly intresting till MGS4 despite not wanting to keep going on with the series. In my mind the story is just MGS3, Portable ops, the originals, and then MGS. I still don't feel MGS2 or 4 fit into the actual story he was trying to make since well, he wanted to stop after MGS. Konami pushed for a sequel due to demand and he rolled out a deconstruction that still mindfucks players to this day.

Also I second the pink floyd reference thing. If anything because I was really into pink floyd while I was playing MGS for the first time.

If anything, that's more proof of Kojima's skill. He managed to get exactly the result he wanted out of players even when he was working mostly against his will. We are all putty in the hands of Kojima. He and Hussie must have attended the same freaking school or somthing.

In this game I'm playing:

"I'm trying to harness the power of love for weapons of mass destruction."
If that wasn't awesome enough, she classified it as "A strong attraction to someone else; That makes it a strong nuclear force, right?"

Best weapon maker.

Right, exactly.  I loved MGS2 because, even if it didn't tell me much about the ongoing tale of Solid Snake, it told me something about myself as a human being.

MGS4... similarly, I learned a lot from that game, even just watching the LP.  I feel like 1 and, presumably 3, are great games, and 2 and 4 are great acts of storytelling (and passable games).  Not in terms of "plot," with the weird conspiracy theory shit, but in terms of saying something about people and the current political climate.

And yes, this is why I love his stuff =/

I guess my main problem with MGS2 and 4 is I kind of already went through issues the games tried to explore so... It was just retreading old ground for me. And at that I was more interested in seeing a character involved story than a metaphor involved deconstruction. I've always preferred character driven plot to a message or some kind of Aesop.

They did do pretty well in what they tried to do though. It just wasn't what I was looking for after MGS.

I consider today's philosophy a grand success. Professor McFacepalm opened with what we were supposed to be doing, then totally derailed into a rant about how evolution is impossible. I refuted his claim and eight other students jumped to my defense when he started up again. Pretty good for a class that was just going to be someone beating us all over the heads with a bible in lieu of any actual teaching with no one actively participating. ^_^

I loved MGS... rented MGS2 and found the gameplay impenetrable.  Haven't played any more of the series since.

Where are you getting these avatars Max White? They're awesome.

And now you have a professor who hates you, that may prove to be a problem.

Yeah, that totally makes sense.  I feel like I've seen quite a few of those themes explored before, too, but not quite in this way... I went "Wow, I didn't even know you could do that in a video game!  This is amazing!"

Ah, well.  In any case, the fact that it's a fun game to even just sit around and watch speaks to his skill.

Hurm, really?  I had a lot of trouble with it when I started, but other than that it seemed to get a lot easier quite quickly.
