To put things in perspective, GCS are widely known to be "docile" and "not so likely to rip limbs off".

I've been looking for something to play with a friend. Something.... Hopefully character focused. I was thinking like an RPG... But what is out there but MMOs? Which he doesn't want to play? And the fact that we need to find something hopefully free...

You could try Neverwinter Nights. It's not free, but you can get it for cheap since it's old. It's got online co-op and a pretty nice modding tools. The gameplay is a little dry though and the expansions are better than the main game.
